Resident of Lviv region with Russian citizenship suspected of organising illegal border crossing for USD 11,000
Under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Region Prosecutor’s Office, a 30-year-old resident of Lviv region was served a notice of suspicion of illegal trafficking of persons across the state border of Ukraine (Part 3 Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
According to the investigation, the suspect organised a scheme to illegally transport men of military age out of the country. He informed his acquaintance about this opportunity at a meeting, who found him a “client”.
Initially, he planned to smuggle the men using fictitious documents, which he promised to produce for a fee. However, with the adoption of amendments to the legislation in May 2024, “difficulties” arose.
In this regard, the man offered the serviceman to illegally cross the border outside one of the checkpoints in Zakarpattia region.
To do this, he gave him “instructions” on how to do it. He assured that the fugitive would be met by his accomplices upon arrival in Mukachevo, who would provide escort to the neighbouring state. The suspect also gave instructions on the man’s further actions when he arrived in the Republic of Hungary to avoid deportation.
The price of this “service” was USD 11,000.
The suspect was detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the CPC of Ukraine while receiving the money.
He has now been remanded in custody with the right to be released on bail.
Investigative actions are ongoing, and all persons involved are being identified.
Additionally, we note that in 2014, while in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the suspect received a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region, with the operational support of the Strategic Investigations Department in Lviv region of the State Bureau of Investigations of the National Police of Ukraine and a unit of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
Note: Pursuant to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and shall not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved by law and established by a court verdict of guilty.
