As the law enforcement officers established, the 83-year-old man from Lviv gave the detainee funds allegedly for emergency surgery on his nephew, who, according to the fraudster, was injured in a traffic accident and needed emergency surgery.
On April 28, around 1:00 p.m., the victim, an 83-year-old man from Lviv, received a phone call from an unknown man who informed him that his grandfather’s nephew was involved in a traffic accident, was seriously injured, and needed money for an urgent operation. The pensioner believed in this fictional story and when a stranger came to his house, he threw twenty thousand US dollars out of the window, as he could not go down the stairs due to his advanced age.
Shortly after, the victim’s daughter returned home, found out that her father had become a victim of a fraudster and reported the incident to the 102 hotline.
Criminal police operatives, investigators and employees of other services of the Lviv District Police Department No. 2 were involved in solving the crime.
As a result of the measures taken, with the help of video surveillance cameras located on the streets as part of the “Safe Lviv Region” program, the law enforcement officers quickly established that a 29-year-old resident of Odesa was involved in the crime, and within two hours after the crime was committed, he was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
Physical evidence (cash in full) has been seized.
Investigators of the territorial division of the police, under the procedural guidance of the Frankiv District Prosecutor’s Office, informed the detainee of the suspicion of committing a criminal offense provided for in Part 3 of Article 190 (Fraud) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for punishment – deprivation of liberty for a term of three to eight years.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, the suspect is in custody according to the court’s decision.
