Lviv region: Police detain offender who stole car to get home
The suspect, a 35-year-old resident of Zhytomyr, faces up to five years in prison for his crime.
On August 9, at about 1 p.m., the 102 operational line received a report from a 60-year-old resident of Solonka village, Lviv district, about the theft of his Renault Megan. According to the applicant, an unknown offender seized the vehicle, which he had left on the side of the road near his house, and drove off in an unknown direction.
Criminal police operatives, investigators and crews of the Patrol Police Response Sector of the Police Department No. 3 of the Lviv District Police Department No. 2 were involved in solving the crime. Law enforcement officers quickly established the location of the wanted car on the Kyiv-Chop highway and detained the driver in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
The detainee was identified as a 35-year-old resident of Zhytomyr city. The offender explained to law enforcement officers that he had stolen the Renault Megan to get home.
Investigators of the territorial police unit, under the procedural supervision of the Pustomyty District Prosecutor’s Office, served him a notice of suspicion of committing a criminal offense under Part 1 of Article 289 (Illegal seizure of a vehicle) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for a sentence of restriction of liberty for a term of three to five years or imprisonment for the same term.
Law enforcement officers took the found car to the impound lot.
