Resident of Brovary is sentenced to more than 5 years behind bars for taking possession of his friend’s car and committing a fatal road accident
Under the public prosecution of the Halych District Prosecutor’s Office of Lviv and the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a 24-year-old resident of Brovary was found guilty of illegal seizure of a vehicle and violation of traffic safety rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, which caused the death of the victim (Part 2 of Article 289, Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

He was sentenced to 5 years and 1 month in prison. He was also deprived of the right to drive vehicles for 5 years.
The prosecutor proved in court that in January 2023, the defendant implemented a plan to illegally seize a Hyundai Sonata vehicle that was in the use of a friend.
The day before, they had been drinking alcohol at a friend’s apartment in one of Lviv’s districts. The defendant asked for permission to go for a drive, but his friend flatly refused. However, at night, when the friend fell asleep, the defendant secretly took the car keys that were on the table, got into the car and drove to his rented apartment. When the curfew expired, the man intended to return to his friend’s apartment, but decided to drive some more, and as a result, ended up outside the city. In violation of traffic rules, he hit a pedestrian and subsequently collided with a stationary truck.
The victim died on the spot as a result of his injuries.
The pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Police Department No. 1 of the Lviv District Police Department No. 1 of the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region and investigators of the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region.
