Today, February 9, proposals for improving the Comprehensive Program for Strengthening the State-Building and Consolidating Role of the Ukrainian Language in the Lviv Region for 2023-2026 were discussed in the Lviv Regional Government.

We would like to remind you that the Program was developed in the Department of Education and Science in cooperation with the Department of Communications and Internal Policy and the Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions of Lviv Oblast.

The discussion was attended by representatives of pedagogical educational institutions, libraries, the Small Academy of Sciences, institutions of youth creativity, public organizations and student self-government, as well as heads of relevant departments of the regional administration, in particular, the director of the Department of Education and Science Oleg Paska and the deputy director of the Department of Culture and Nationalities and religion Tatyana Pluhator.

As the deputy head of the Lviv OVA Ivan Sobko noted, the main task of the Program is to provide more opportunities for learning and improving one’s knowledge of the Ukrainian language in the Lviv region, and at the same time to create conditions that will encourage the transition to the Ukrainian language of Russian-speaking residents of the region.

“The set of measures envisaged by the Program should cover a clear plan of action, starting from preschool education institutions and ending with higher education institutions. I emphasize that we are talking about the popularization of the Ukrainian language, in particular, among internally displaced persons who are currently in Lviv region, as well as the maximum provision of equal rights of all citizens to access Ukrainian language training and courses. The projects should cover schools, extracurricular activities, enterprises, public transport, so that it is obvious that the Ukrainian language is used exclusively in the Lviv region and knowledge of the language needs to be improved, and if necessary, studied,” Ivan Sobko said.

Objectives of the Program:

– To strengthen the state status of the Ukrainian language;
– To improve the quality of Ukrainian language teaching;
– Promotion of fluency in the Ukrainian language;
– Consolidate citizens of Ukraine who currently live in Lviv Oblast, based on the recognition of the value of the Ukrainian language and culture.

Measures provided by the Program:

– Conducting regional competitions and thematic summer camp;
– Launch of a thematic information campaign in social networks;
– Edition of the dictionary of the most used words of foreign origin;
– Organization of business Ukrainian language courses;
– Publication of educational and methodical literature, etc.

During the meeting, representatives of educational institutions discussed proposals for improving the program and its implementation. The Department of Education and Science plans to make final changes to the Program within ten days.

Funding of the Program will be carried out within the limits of the allocations provided for in the regional budget, as well as from other sources not prohibited by the current legislation of Ukraine, including from the state budget, from other local budgets, grants, funds of economic entities, personal households of the population.
