Lviv educators help Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes and moved to Lviv because of the war, improve their knowledge of their native language.
An initiative group of teachers organized the educational project “Speak Ukrainian” for internally displaced people living in the modular town “Mariapolis” and for several weeks helped them adapt to their new place of residence, improving their spoken Ukrainian language. Several times a week, educators met with immigrants, talked, walked around the city and encouraged them to communicate in Ukrainian.
“We don’t tell any rules, any syntax. We simply encourage people to try to use the Ukrainian language in communication. We do not insist, we do not pressure, we do not teach. We are trying to carry out such a quiet Ukrainization,” the teachers share.
The topics of the “Conversations in Ukrainian” classes are quite broad:
· from the history of Lviv to the democratic foundations of community and state creation;
· from the traditions of Ukrainian cuisine to embroidery styles in different regions of Ukraine;
· from a Ukrainian folk song to a discussion of favorite books.
The teachers plan to return to the repeated project from September.
