In Drohobych, after the winter period, at the beginning of April, the water column in the city’s central square resumed operation. The information was announced by Drohobychvodokanal. The column, which has long been a unique decoration of the city and attracts tourists, is connected to two sources at the same time – the Uriz and Hirnyansky water supply systems.
With the resumption of the column’s operation, Drohobych residents and tourists of Kotermak will have access to drinking water in a public place, which is especially important during the hot season, the company says.
In addition, the water column is one of the original exhibits of the Drohobych Street Museum and is one of the favorite places for selfies.
According to the Drohobychvodokanal, there used to be a well on Rynok Square in Drohobych from which anyone could drink water. However, this water had a salty taste. According to historians, this was a problem throughout the city, so it was decided to build a water supply system.
According to Roman Shagala, head of Drohobychvodokanal, it was decided to install a drinking column as part of the square’s reconstruction in 2020 so that everyone could drink good water.
This is an original column made by the Austrian company Hawle. The company is the best in Europe and specializes in the manufacture of high-quality equipment for the water supply and sewage industry. Water is supplied to the column from the water supply system. A drainage system is installed near the column. According to the technical characteristics, this column can operate both in warm and cold seasons,” said Roman Shagala.
In addition to its main function, the column has another practical significance, as it is one of the exhibits of the Kotermak Street Museum, and thus constantly attracts the attention of guests and tourists of Drohobych. So during tourist excursions around the city, guides tell the story of the water column’s installation and emphasize its uniqueness.
