Young Lviv Resident Overcomes Rare Illness

A young resident of Lviv, who suffered from a rare condition — intestinal lymphangiectasia, spent 44 days in intensive care and a further 32 days receiving inpatient treatment. His condition was critical, and he required specialised treatment at the Western Ukrainian Specialised Centre for Paediatric Medicine.

The infant was admitted to the Centre at the age of 3.5 months after his mother had been consulting paediatricians for over a month due to his constant weight loss and vomiting. The symptoms worsened, prompting the mother to seek specialists for a detailed examination.

Initial diagnostics revealed a critical loss of body proteins, complicated by severe electrolyte imbalances and liver dysfunction. His immune system nearly ceased functioning, sepsis developed, and heart problems emerged.

Doctors battled septic shock and multiple organ failure. They stabilised his heart, selected therapeutic nutrition, and administered proteins and immunoglobulins. Diagnostic procedures, including endoscopies and genetic tests, allowed for the diagnosis to be established.

The child is now 11 months old and is under the careful supervision of specialists, regularly undergoing check-ups at the paediatric gastroenterology clinic.
