Eight-year-old Zakhar from the Ivano-Frankivsk region, who lived for over six months without kidneys, is returning home following a successful transplant. Zakhar underwent his second transplantation in Lviv, this time from a deceased donor.
Unfortunately, the first transplanted kidney from his grandmother was affected by a chronic disease — focal-segmental glomerulonephritis. In August last year, a septic condition arose, and doctors had to remove the organ. Since then, the boy received only renal replacement therapy.
After receiving notification from the Ukrainian Transplant Coordination Centre about a new donor, an examination was conducted, and the very next day, Zakhar received the transplant. The post-operative period proved challenging, but thanks to timely measures, a relapse of the disease was prevented. The clinic’s head, Roman Andrunevych, explained that modern therapeutic approaches were used for this.
Today, Zakhar can once again be a child: to play and enjoy a cup of tea with his brother, as he always dreamed. Gratitude goes to the donor’s family and the “Wings of Hope” Charity Foundation for their support in the boy’s treatment.
