The restoration of the bell tower of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, one of the most important sacred buildings in Lviv region, is underway in Drohobych. The temple complex is an architectural monument of national importance and a vivid example of the Ukrainian Renaissance.
Restoration of cultural heritage sites is a painstaking and time-consuming process. It is important to understand the peculiarities of the religious building, its symbolism and the style of the architectural era. To preserve and reproduce all the elements as much as possible.
Repair and restoration work is carried out with co-financing from the regional and local budgets. This year, in order to complete the work, co-financing in the amount of UAH 815 thousand was provided from the regional budget under the program “Protection, preservation and popularization of historical and cultural heritage in Lviv region for 2021-2025”. The restoration is scheduled to be completed this year.
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Drohobych was built in 1613. This sacred building was built at the expense of the owners of the salt mining industry in Drohobych. Throughout its history, the church has survived several fires, many alterations and reconstructions.
The wooden bell tower was built next to the church in 1661. It consists of three tiers and is square in plan. Together with the bell tower, the church forms a harmonious architectural ensemble.
Now the church and the bell tower are a museum object and, together with the most famous Drohobych church of St. George, are part of the Drohobychyna museum complex.
