Today, UCU in Lviv presented an exhibition dedicated to Ivan Grechko’s collection

On June 18, at 4:00 p.m., the Ukrainian Catholic University presented a unique exhibition project “Imagination of the collection” in Lviv. How Ivan Grechko searched for beauty…”.

In the Powder Tower, works from the collection of Ivan Grechko – an extraordinary Lviv resident, associate of the restoration of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, public figure and patriarch of Ukrainian collecting – are on display.

Ivan Grechko’s collection is an exceptional phenomenon in the cultural space of Lviv and Ukraine. Its formation coincided with the formation of the dissident movement in Ukraine and the revival of interest among the Ukrainian intelligentsia of the 1960s in the heritage of folk art and the creation of new Ukrainian art. Ivan Grechko, who became one of the first collectors of folk art in the post-war period, was directly involved in this movement.

Ten years ago, Ivan Grechko donated a significant part of his collection to the Ukrainian Catholic University for preservation and display. This gift was the beginning for the foundation of the university museum. On the anniversary of the collector’s departure to eternity, UCU presents a project in memory of this outstanding person to Lviv residents and guests of the city.

At the exhibition, you will be able to view one of the largest collections of Ukrainian icons on glass from the Hutsul region and Pokutty, old prints, candlesticks, handmade crosses, Easter eggs, ceramics, textiles, and wooden sculptures. Paintings of the artistic milieu of Lviv and Galicia of the 20th century from the Grechko collection will also be presented.

Experts from the fields of art, history, and museology joined the organization of the exhibition project, including: exhibition curator Roman Zilinko, museum curator and restorer Svitlana Tymkiv, researcher of folk icon painting on glass and well-known artist Oksana Romaniv-Triska, journalist, art critic and art historian Oleksandra Kushchenko , Zoryana Rybchynska and Khrystyna Rutar, members of the team of the department of cultural studies of UCU.

The opening of the exhibition took place on Sunday, June 18, at 4:00 p.m.

The exhibition will last from June 18 to August 13 in Lviv, at the Center for Architecture, Design and Urbanism “Powder Tower”, str. Podvalna, 4. The project also plans a parallel program.

The exhibition project is among the winners of the ZMIN Foundation competition, which financially supported the restoration and decoration of the works.
