The race “I honour the soldiers, I run for the heroes of Ukraine” is an annual patriotic tradition to honour the memory of soldiers who died during the Russian-Ukrainian war, timed to coincide with the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine.
The event is all-Ukrainian, with participants starting simultaneously in different cities on 31 August. In Lviv, the runners gathered in Stryi Park.
During registration, those wishing to take part in the event chose which of the fallen soldiers they wanted to dedicate the race to. The name and surname of this person was written next to the runner’s race number. In this way, they paid tribute to these Heroes and stressed the need to remember them and their deeds.
To recap: Requiem evening for fallen Ukrainian defenders held in Lviv region
“Heroes are not a collective image. They are specific people with specific names. They had different preferences, life goals and plans. The annual event “I honour soldiers, I run for the Heroes of Ukraine” is particularly valuable because it emphasises this. Everyone ran in memory of a particular hero. This year I am running for Artem Dymyd,” said Roman Khimyak, head of the Youth and Sports Department of the Lviv Regional Military Administration.
The participants had three distances to choose from: 2 km, 5 km and 10 km. In addition to runners, representatives of Nordic walking added to the course, and there were also races for children. Participants of the running battles in the youngest categories received delicious gifts from our partners, Gullon.
The organisers of “I honour soldiers, I run for the Heroes of Ukraine” in the city of Lviv are the Lviv Regional Centre for Physical Health “Sport for All”. More than 40 volunteers were involved in this large-scale event.
