“I dreamed of learning to drive for more than 10 years and finally got this opportunity,” – student of the Driving School for Persons with Disabilities Valery Bezverkhy

A unique project of the Ministry of Internal Affairs – “Driving School for Persons with Disabilities” – started this year on the basis of the Lviv State University of Internal Affairs.

The project was implemented as part of the First Lady Olena Zelenska’s initiative “Without Barriers”.

Currently, six students from different regions of Ukraine are studying at the driving school in Lviv. Soon they will be able to drive their own cars and better adapt to social challenges.

Valery Bezverkhy, a student of the course, shared his story, talked about his motivation and impressions of participating in the project.

The man is from Kherson, but a few months after the Russian military invasion, he evacuated with his friends to Kovel, in Volyn. In his hometown, he managed the project “Social Taxi for Persons with Disabilities”, cooperated with public organizations and charitable foundations.

“Now I am in constant online contact with volunteer colleagues from the Kherson Region – we are resuming social work that is important for our state, interrupted by the Great War. It is necessary to work for Ukraine today, here and now, to move and develop. Of course, everyone is waiting for Victory and the return of our soldiers from the front, but for this we need to act every day, to be useful to each other,” noted Valery Bezverkhy.

The man is actively involved in sports, in particular weightlifting and football, regularly attends the gym. I wanted to get a driver’s license for a long time. So when I came across the news about recruitment to the Driving School for Persons with Disabilities in Lviv, I immediately volunteered.

“I dreamed of learning to drive for more than 10 years and finally got this opportunity. Despite my disability, I can move around quite freely. However, it can be done much faster with a car, so it is a very useful practical skill. Sometimes it becomes almost the only means of transportation. When getting somewhere is quite difficult, this skill can help a lot, especially in modern circumstances. Therefore, for me, participation in the Driving School is an invaluable experience,” Valery Bezverkhy shared.

He also noted that the main criterion for choosing a driving school was a distance course in theory.

“It’s good that we passed the theoretical unit in an online format. The group leader devoted time and attention to each of us, answered all our questions in detail. We were immediately given a complete list of recommended literature for the program and advised on electronic resources for better study of the topic. I passed the theoretical exam well, so I’m doubly satisfied,” Valery Bezverkhy said.

We remind you that to become a listener of the project, you need:

1. Pass the medical and social expert commission, which determines medical indications for the right of a person to receive a car and contraindications to driving it. In addition, get a certificate about the group and the reason for the disability.

2. Pass a medical examination of candidates for driving vehicles in any health care institution that examines such persons. Obtain a medical certificate regarding fitness to drive a vehicle.
