Grass Fires: Dangers and Fines
❗️❗️❗️ We have the first administrative protocols this year for residents who set fire to dry grass. Reminder: burning dry grass is prohibited by current legislation. The Office of Agglomeration and Community Development urges residents to be conscientious.
It’s sunny outside again, which means an increased danger of grass and reed fires in suburban areas and even in parks. The spring wind quickly carries sparks, so a small fire quickly escalates, burning hectares of land.
Fires in Lysynychi and Zashkiv
- In Lysynychi, a fire engulfed about three hectares of land. Andriy Shengofer, the head of the community office in Lysynychi, says he immediately called the State Emergency Service workers when he saw smoke from the residential area. Rescuers arrived quickly. However, the fire had already destroyed a significant area. The identity of the arsonist could not be determined.
- In Zashkiv, two administrative protocols have already been issued to residents who burned dry grass in their yards. This is also prohibited. According to the law, for setting grass fires, citizens must pay a fine of between 3,060 UAH and 6,120 UAH. Officials – from 15,300 UAH to 21,420 UAH.
In some communities, grass fires have decreased compared to previous years. Unfortunately, this phenomenon cannot be eradicated entirely. According to regional SES data, 90 grass fires were recorded in the Lviv region in just one day. This equates to tens of hectares of burnt land, meaning plants, animals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians are affected. For example, reeds, which are often set on fire, serve as a refuge for animals and birds. Often, fire threatens residential and farm buildings.
