A new petition to the president on the protection of cultural space is rapidly gaining support

The public is gathering signatures on a petition to the president demanding he sign the Law on the Prohibition of the Import and Distribution of Publishing Products of the Aggressor State.

The petition has already been supported, in particular, by Oksana Zabuzhko, Maryana Savka, Andriy Kurkov, Tamara Gorikha Zernya, Vakhtang Kipiani, Irma Vitovska, Volodymyr Vyatrovych, Valery Pekar, Hanna Hopko, Anton Martynov and other intellectuals and public figures. Calls to sign the petition were also distributed by the largest Ukrainian publishing houses – Ranok, Folio, Vivat, A-ba-ba-ga-la-ma-ga, the “Knygoland” bookstore chain and the “E” bookstore. Already on the first day, the appeal gained more than 30% of the required 25,000 signatures.

Messages are being actively distributed on social networks calling on the President to sign the Law. “This war is primarily a war for identity. The aggressor’s publishing products are also an occupation! Support the petition to the president with a call to sign the law banning the import and distribution of Russian books and spread this call in any convenient way,” the appeal reads.

Back in June of last year, the parliament adopted the book Law by 306 votes and handed it over to the president for signature. However, the document has not been signed yet. Publishing products of the aggressor state and Russian counterfeits continue to be freely sold in Ukraine, undermining the information security of the state and the economic foundations of Ukrainian book publishing.

This Law, developed jointly with representatives of civil society, the publishing community and the authorities:

prohibits the import and distribution of publishing products from Russia and Belarus;
provides for the publication of books in Ukraine in the original language or translated into Ukrainian, languages of the EU or indigenous peoples of Ukraine;
blocks the possibility of importing publications with anti-Ukrainian content.
