The Lesya Theater invites you to a performance about Lesya Ukrainka

On June 1, Lviv will host another premiere of the play “Lesya. History”. The Lesi Theater invites you to start the summer together with the famous Ukrainian poetess.

“Lesia. History” is a performance about Lesya Ukrainka, in which the epistolary legacy of the poetess, historical facts about her, folklore collected by her, personal interpretation of her character by actors and actresses, special visual, scenographic and sound components are interwoven.

The play was created based on the poet’s letters. Actors and actresses of the theater will speak to the audience with the words that Lesya Ukrainka wrote in her letters. This gives an opportunity to get as close as possible to the figure of Lesi. In addition, the performance “Lesia. History” is also based on Lesya Ukrainka’s poem “Robert Bruce, King of Scotland”.

The play was created by an international team.

The performance was directed by Lenka Udovicki, a Serbian theater and opera director and an activist living in Croatia. She is the artistic director of Ulysses Theater and co-founder of the School of Acting and Media at the University of Rijeka (Croatia). Lenka collaborated with a number of European and American theaters, operas and philharmonics: English National Opera Studio, Globe Theatre, Opera Circus, Zagreb Philharmonic and UCLA Live festival.

“Lesia Ukrainka is a particularly important figure not only for Ukrainians. I think it is important for humanity in general. When I began to read more and learn more about Lesya Ukrainka, to explore her character, I felt that I was becoming closer to her. With her works, Lesya Ukrayinka touches people’s hearts, something very deep,” says Lenka Udovichki.

Composer of the play is Nigel Osborne, British composer, teacher, author of music therapy methods. Professor of music at Edinburgh University, member of the British Academy of Composers. He has been engaged in music therapy for war-traumatized children from all over the world for more than 30 years. For his methodology, Nigel Osborne received the Freedom Prize of the Peace Institute in Sarajevo.

In addition to the Lesi Theater team, the following joined the production of the play: producer Veronika Sklyarova (program director of the Parade Fest art and urbanism festival, cultural manager, producer of independent projects); choreographer Victor Ruban (dancer, performer, director, choreographer, researcher and coach, founder and director of Ruban Production ITP); choirmaster Marichka Chichkova (musician, cultural manager, researcher of traditional music, choirmaster of the Lviv Puppet Theater).

In total, there will be two screenings of the play “Lesya. History”: June 1 and 23. Location – Great Hall (entrance from 36 Horodotska Street). All performances start at 18:00.
