Lviv has completed the restoration of the rotunda in Bernardine’s Courtyard, which is almost 300 years old

The restoration of the rotunda on the well in the Bernardine Courtyard has been completed. The stone in the rotunda was cleaned, the dome coating was replaced, the gilding of the sculpture of St John of Dukla was restored and renewed, and the paintings inside the dome were restored.

This was reported by the Lviv City Council.

Landscaping around the rotunda was also arranged, including cutting down two dangerous trees and planting new ones instead. The restoration work was financed by the Polonika Institute.

“Now all this beauty can be seen in the Bernardine Courtyard. It looks fascinating.

Specialists from Ukraine and Poland worked on the restoration of the paintings. We thank the restorers: Paweł Jędrzejczak, Dorota Misiuk-Jędrzejczak, Iryna Dutkiewicz, Valeriy Kolibaba, and Ostap Kolechko.

And special thanks to the Polonika Institute for funding and involvement in the preservation of Lviv’s cultural heritage,” said Yevhen Boyko, manager of the Lviv City Council’s executive committee.

As a reminder, the rotunda on the well in the Bernardine Courtyard was built in 1748-1755 and, according to legend, is located on the burial site of the Bernardine monk St John of Dukla, who was considered the patron saint of Lviv in the 17th century. A sculpture of the saint crowns the dome of the building, and its vaults bear paintings dedicated to his deeds.

Restoration of the rotunda began in 2019. However, the work was soon halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the full-scale war. “In fact, the main work was completed this year. In general, they cleaned the stone, replaced the dome coating, restored and gilded the sculpture of St John of Dukla, and restored the mural inside the dome. We also arranged landscaping around the rotunda, including cutting down two dangerous trees and planting new ones instead,” said Lilia Onyshchenko, Lviv City Mayor’s Advisor on Cultural Heritage Preservation.

The rotunda is part of the Bernardine Monastery complex, an architectural monument of national importance.
