Intending to embezzle more than 50,000 US dollars, which the attacker received from acquaintances for the purchase of cars, he tried to take their lives by detonating a grenade in the passenger compartment of a car in which four people were.
The event took place on May 27 around 2 p.m. The police received a report about an explosion in a Mitsubishi car in the parking lot of one of the hotels located in the Lviv district near the state border with the Republic of Poland.
According to the law enforcement officers, an F-1 grenade exploded in the car, as a result of which the passengers – a 54-year-old woman and three men, two of whom are her peers, and the third – 43 years old, were injured. All residents of Kyiv region.
Also, during the pre-trial investigation, it was established that the grenade was left in the car by an acquaintance of the victims – a 41-year-old man from Kyiv, with whom they had common business. So, a few weeks before this event, the perpetrator offered his acquaintances to transfer to him a significant amount of money, with which he was supposed to purchase cars abroad, deliver them to the territory of Ukraine, and then give them to customers.
Acquaintances gave the man funds in the amount of more than 50,000 US dollars, but he did not buy cars, but appropriated the money. After some time, clients began to be more and more interested in why they still haven’t received their cars – then the attacker announced that the cars should arrive from abroad in the near future, and together with the future owners, he came to Lviv region to meet the non-existent cars.
Since the attacker did not actually buy any cars, and had no intention of returning the funds, he decided to kill his customers. When everyone got into the Mitsubishi car, he got out of the car under a contrived pretext, leaving a bag with a grenade he had bought in advance on the front passenger seat. The grenade exploded, injuring people who were in the cabin. Fortunately, none of the people died.
The investigators informed the perpetrator of suspicion of criminal offenses provided for in part 2 of article 15 – paragraphs 1, 5, 6 of part 2 of article 115 (Attempt to murder) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, part 1 of article 263 (Illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and Part 2 of Article 194 (Intentional destruction or damage to property) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The pre-trial investigation has been completed. The indictment is referred to the court. The maximum penalty for the accused is life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
