Driver Under the Influence Causes Fatal Accident in Lviv District
Police have charged a driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, with causing a fatal accident in Lviv District and fleeing the scene. As a result of the incident, two passengers of the car died, and two others sustained injuries. The suspect faces a penalty of up to twelve years in prison for his actions.
Details of the Accident
The road accident occurred on February 15, around 05.50, in the village of Kymyr, Lviv District. As initially determined by the police, the driver of the VAZ 2108 vehicle, a 23-year-old resident of Lviv District, lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, and crashed into the concrete base of a bridge.
As a result of the accident, the car’s passengers: a 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man, both from Lviv District, died at the scene. Two other passengers: an 18-year-old resident of Sheptytskyi District and a 33-year-old resident of Lviv District sustained injuries and were hospitalized.
Investigation and Penalty
The driver fled the scene. Police conducted search operations, located him, and detained him according to Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. It was established that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
Investigators from the Transport Crimes Investigation Department of Lviv Police, under the procedural guidance of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, informed the detainee of suspects in committing criminal offenses under Part 4 of Article 286-1 (Violation of traffic safety rules or vehicle operation by persons under the influence, causing the death of multiple persons) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and Part 1 of Article 135 (Leaving in danger) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The maximum penalty provided by the articles’ sanctions is up to twelve years of imprisonment with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a term of seven to ten years. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and, by court decision, the suspect is being held in custody.
