A cigarette butt almost cost a life
On 29 October, at 17:36, rescuers received a report of a fire in the town of Novyi Rozdil on Malekhivska Street, Stryi district, in a brick one-storey residential building.
Rescuers from Novyi Rozdil were sent to the scene.
Even before the firefighters arrived, neighbours noticed the smoke and rushed to help without hesitation. They took the owner of the house, born in 1955, out of the smoke-filled room, saving him from an even greater threat.
The firefighters contained the fire at 18:01 and eliminated it at 18:04.
The mattress was on fire.
The man was hospitalised in a moderate condition at the Novorozdilsk City Hospital.
The building was saved.
Six rescuers and one unit of special equipment were engaged to eliminate the fire.
The fire could have been caused by a cigarette butt.
To avoid a fire due to careless handling of fire:
1. Never put cigarette butts in the rubbish – always extinguish them completely.
2. Do not smoke in bed or on upholstered furniture.
3. Always make sure you put the cigarette out completely.
4. Remember: even a small cigarette butt can cause a large fire.
