The tradition of pysankarstva is an ancient Ukrainian tradition. For our ancestors, the egg was a symbol of spring, awakening. The painting itself is a kind of ritual aimed at improving life. All the patterns are magical formulas that strengthened the wishes of the authors of the painting: that the family should be prosperous, the land should be fertile, and the cattle should be fruitful. Old people say: as long as people write Easter eggs, there will be love in the world. It was given as a sign of a truce, wishes for health, beauty, strength, harvest, and was used as a protection against natural disasters.
According to the law of pysankarstva, the amulet must be kept for a year, until the next Easter, and then a new egg is written, because during the year something changes in a person’s life, he wants something else, accordingly, he orders something new for himself. An old Easter egg is buried in the ground. It is “not good” to throw her out or beat her. Easter eggs, unlike eggs, are not eaten, because they are charms.
