Lviv region wants to rebuild railway infrastructure

The European gauge railway to Khyrov has now been fully restored.

For transport integration with the EU, it is necessary to rebuild the railway infrastructure to meet European standards. Stepan Rudnytskyi, Head of the Transport Division of the Road Department of the Lviv Oblast State Administration, told Tvoemisto.tv during a discussion.

“In the international context, we have a Soviet track gauge of 1520 millimetres, to which the entire infrastructure is tied. In Europe, the gauge is 1435 millimetres. Lviv region has four entry points – Rava-Ruska, Mostyska, Nyzhankovychi near Khyrov and Smilnytsia.

To recap: Euro-gauge railway from Mostyska to Lviv may cost UAH 1.8 billion

“We are working on the development of design and estimate documentation to extend the European railway from Rava-Ruska to Bryukhovychi, which is closer to Lviv. For freight traffic – from Mostyska to Sknyliv. We have design and estimate documentation, USAID is ready to finance part of the work, and we expect progress this year,” says Orest Shulikovsky, director of the road department at LOVA.

We’re getting there: A 1435 mm wide European gauge will be built on the section from Mostyska to Lviv

The European gauge track to Khyrov has been fully restored, and the launch of the train has been worked out with Polish partners. The train service to Rava-Ruska has been restored and extended to other regions. The local minibus network is also tied to its schedule. A passenger from another region can travel by train and within the region by minibus to Lviv or to Rava-Ruska to catch a train to Warsaw.
