The Highway Service of the region reminds you about the peculiarities of driving a car on a slippery road

Weather conditions are expected to worsen in Lviv Oblast. Rainfall and snow, as well as a decrease in air temperature, will already be observed today.

The Highway Service of the Lviv region warns about this.

As a result of such weather conditions, ice is possible on certain sections of highways. Deterioration of visibility in precipitation. Road users are prepared for the worsening of weather conditions. Shifting of road services is carried out around the clock – SAD informs.

Drivers are also reminded of the peculiarities of driving a car on a slippery road: when tires hit ice, their grip on the road immediately decreases by 4-5 times, which in turn increases the braking distance of vehicles several times. And this means that a quick stop of the car is simply impossible. Such road conditions require drivers to pay more attention to their own safety measures and perfect observance of the Traffic Rules.

Drivers of large vehicles are asked to wait out bad weather at parking lots located along state roads (search on the map https://bit.ly/3DeFe6w). In particular, the request concerns those drivers who travel in the direction of the western border. This will help to ensure the timely passage of snow removal equipment and prevent the accumulation of large-sized cargo vehicles at the entrances to checkpoints.

You should also follow the following recommendations for driving a car in icy and snow conditions:

do not brake sharply on a slippery road, it is not only useless, but also dangerous. Sharp braking leads to locking of the wheels and an increase in the braking distance, and most often to a loss of controllability. The most important safety measure in the conditions is to maintain a safe distance, which makes it possible to stop and brake unhindered. In order to warn of the upcoming braking of the driver behind the moving car, you can touch the brake pedal several times, attracting attention with a flashing brake light. Do not resort to emergency braking, if it is not related to the need to prevent an accident;
when driving through a dangerous area, try to keep the speed constant, use the accelerator pedal very carefully, smoothly, gently. Do not make sharp steering movements and maneuvers;
be especially careful when driving on bridges and overpasses. The ice layer on these sections of the road appears earlier than everywhere else, and disappears later. In these zones, avoid sudden movements of the steering wheel, gas, brakes;
on a slippery road it is better to avoid sharp maneuvers and overtaking. When going uphill, choose such a gear that you don’t have to shift until the ascent is completely completed. Do not press the clutch pedal during descent, brake smoothly when driving the car at speed;
don’t forget pedestrians. People crossing the road can slip and fall. Therefore, try not to scare the pedestrian with sharp sound and light signals. When approaching pedestrian crossings and locations of children’s institutions, reduce speed to a minimum;
do not neglect your own safety and the safety of passengers. Pay close attention to forecasters’ forecasts;
in conditions of snowfall, it is necessary to observe the speed regime, parking rules (so as not to interfere with the operation of snow removal equipment). If you need to stop, reduce your speed gradually. And when stopping, turn on the emergency light signaling.
