Prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office defended a new, more severe sentence for a resident of Stryi district – 10 years in prison. He was also deprived of the right to drive vehicles for 10 years.
The man was convicted of violating traffic safety rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, which caused the death of several people (Part 4 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
It was established that in July 2021, at lunchtime, the convict, while intoxicated, was driving a car and caused a road accident.
Moving along the road in one of the villages of Stryi district, the man exceeded the speed limit, drove into the oncoming lane and collided with a car carrying a family with two children. As a result of the accident, the passengers of the oncoming car, a mother, father and their young child were killed, and another child was seriously injured.
The district court sentenced the defendant to 7 years in prison. However, the prosecutors disagreed with this decision, considering it too lenient for such a crime, and appealed it.
Having heard the prosecutor’s arguments, the Court of Appeal overturned the verdict of the first instance court and issued a new one.
