Bus driver causes fatal accident near Lviv and flees the scene

The BAZ bus involved in the hit-and-run was taken by law enforcement to a special impound lot. The fugitive driver faces up to eight years in prison.

The accident occurred on 18 February at around 20.40 in the village of Zhyrivka, Lviv district. An unknown driver, driving an unidentified vehicle, hit a 52-year-old local woman who was walking on the roadway and fled the scene.

As a result of the accident, the woman sustained injuries and died.

Criminal police operatives, together with investigators and officers of the Patrol Police Response Sector of the Police Department No. 3 of the Lviv District Police Department No. 2, as well as officers of the Criminal Analysis Department of the Lviv Police, were involved in the search for the fugitive driver.

As a result of the measures taken, having studied the video surveillance footage of the Safe Lviv Region system, law enforcement officers established that the woman was hit by a 68-year-old Lviv resident, a driver of a BAZ bus. The vehicle used in the hit-and-run was taken to the impound lot.

Investigators of the Transport Crimes Investigation Department opened criminal proceedings over the incident under Part 2 of Article 286 (Violation of the rules of road safety or operation of transport by persons driving vehicles) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for a term of three to eight years with or without deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for up to three years.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
