In the region, the memory of the Lviv professors who were shot on the Vuletsk hills was commemorated

Those present laid flowers at the monument and at the cross at the place of execution. The clergy served a memorial service.

Today, July 4, events were held to honor the memory of Lviv professors who were shot by the Nazis on the night of July 4, 1941 on the Vuletsk hills.

Every year on this day, representatives of the educational environment of Lviv region remember the tragic pages of the history shared by Ukraine and Poland. Under the cover of night, the Nazis, who occupied Lviv, arrested and shot almost fifty Polish scientists and teachers, as well as their families.

Near the monument, which was erected in the form of stones symbolizing the ten commandments of God, where the fifth commandment – “Thou shalt not kill!” was broken, the clergy sent a memorial prayer.

The event was attended by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Regional Policy of the Republic of Poland Malgozata Jarosinska-Yedynak, the leadership of regional structures, in particular the deputy head of the Lviv OVA Ivan Sobko, the director of the department of international technical assistance and cooperation of the Lviv OVA Roman Shepelyak, rectors of Lviv and Polish universities, diplomatic corps, clergy, public.

Those present also placed flowers at the monument and at the cross at the place of execution.

On the night of July 4, 1941, separate departments of the Halychyna special-purpose group under the Security Police and the Security Service under the command of SS Brigadeführer Dr. Karl Ebergard Schönart arrested 21 professors of higher educational institutions in Lviv, as well as their relatives, persons staying in apartments at the time of the arrest, there were only 52 servants.

After short interrogations, at approximately 4 o’clock in the morning on July 4, 1941, the arrested were taken to the foothills of the Vuletsk hills, to a pre-dug pit. In groups of four, they were brought to her and shot.

On July 4, 2011, on the 70th anniversary of the tragedy, at the initiative of the mayors of Lviv and Wroclaw, a monument to the murdered Lviv professors was opened in Lviv.

Every year, on July 3, at the site of the shootings, Ukrainian intelligentsia is commemorated with the participation of rectors of delegations from European universities, in particular, higher educational institutions of the Republic of Poland.
