At the start of the new semester, students of Lviv’s Lyceum No. 5, damaged during Russian shelling on September 4, 2024, resumed their studies in a fully restored building.
Consequences of the Shelling:
The attack caused significant damage to the school:
- 74 windows and 49 doors were destroyed,
- Stairwells were damaged,
- The roof suffered the most destruction.
The restoration was made possible with assistance from Freiburg, Lviv’s sister city, which allocated €100,000 for the repairs.
Back to School:
According to Andrii Zakaliuk, head of Lviv’s Education Department, students returned to their lyceum this week. While repairs were ongoing, some pupils attended classes at a neighboring school. “We thank our international partners and everyone who contributed to restoring the lyceum. This is a significant step for our community,” he said.
Impact of the September 4 Attack on Lviv:
- 8 people were killed, including 1 child,
- 71 individuals were injured, among them 10 children,
- 189 buildings were damaged, including 5 schools, 2 creative centers, 2 medical facilities, and St. George the Victorious Church.
- The attack also damaged 19 architectural monuments.
The total damage to the city is estimated to exceed 1 billion UAH.
