In 2022, the city composting station received about 7,000 tons of organic matter

In the course of 2022, to the city composting station located on the street Plastova, 13, received almost 7,000 tons of food and garden waste.

“Despite the difficulties of martial law, the Lviv composting station continues to accept and process organic matter. Separately collected organic and garden waste is accepted for processing into organic fertilizer.

For 2022, we can report the following figures: food waste was received in the amount of 3,111.6 tons, garden waste – 3,722.5 tons.

Throughout 2022, our permanent partners, in addition to carriers, are the following organizations: Shuvar LLC, GALKA LLC, DPZKU JSC, Lviv KHP, Lviv Refrigeration Plant PJSC. “McDonald’s” has also resumed cooperation with us since October, LKP “Green City” noted.

At the same time, residents are reminded that containers with organics are located at almost every garbage site in Lviv (99% coverage). The location of the nearest one can be found on the map by following the link.

In particular, the following can be thrown into the special brown bins for organics:

remains of raw vegetables and fruits;
egg shells;
flour products, leftover confectionery products;
tea leaves without tea bags, coffee grounds;
mowed grass;
withered flowers

Instead, you can not throw in containers for organics:

meat, fish, dairy and fatty products;
solid household waste;
glass and glass containers;
plastic, balls, bags, packaging waste, tetra-pac;
napkins and paper products;
fabric products.

By the way, you can use biodegradable bags for the separate collection of organic waste – they can be thrown away with the waste, because they are compostable.

We would like to remind you that from January 1, 2023, the Law “On restricting the circulation of plastic bags in the territory of Ukraine” will finally enter into force. Therefore, it is prohibited to distribute all ultra-thin, thin and collapsible plastic bags, including those for packing ice, bulk products, meat, and fresh fish, in retail, catering and service facilities. Biodegradable, paper or plastic bags with a thickness of more than 50 micrometers should become an alternative to them.

“The presence of biodegradable bags will not only simplify the separate collection of organic waste and, we hope, will encourage even more citizens to join the separate collection of organics. In addition, the distribution of biodegradable bags will significantly simplify the introduction of this practice in other cities and will be an incentive for the construction of composting stations in Ukraine,” says Iryna Myronova, executive director of the NGO “Zero Waste Lviv”.

In November 2018, the executive committee of the LMR adopted a decision to limit the use of plastic bags. Therefore, the city hall together with Zero Waste Lviv started an educational campaign “No Polyethylene”. The first of a series of campaign events was the Plastic Free Day in the city’s supermarkets, when the organizers of the educational campaign called on supermarkets to actively inform consumers about the practices that have already been implemented to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags.
