SARS patients have increased in Lviv: doctors urge vaccination

Last week – from October 9 to 15, 5,100 people fell ill with acute respiratory viral infections in Lviv, and this is 21% more than the previous week. Now the intensive disease rate exceeds the epidemic threshold by 8.3%.

“According to morbidity monitoring, 5,100 cases of acute respiratory infections were registered in the 41st week of 2023. The intensive rate is 666.6 per 100,000 population. For comparison, in the previous, 40th week, there were 4,205 cases, the intensive rate was 549.7 per 100,000 population. In other words, we have a 21% increase in morbidity,” explained Marta Matyushko, head of the health care department of the Lviv City Council.

Among the sick are 2,227 children under the age of 17. This is 43.7% of the total number of patients.

Doctors remind: the flu virus is dangerous, but you can protect yourself by following simple rules. First of all, get vaccinated against the flu, because the flu is the only respiratory disease against which there is an effective vaccine. Do not forget about a healthy and balanced diet, which will strengthen your immune system, as well as physical exercises, which will also speed up recovery after illness. If possible, ventilate the room you are in as often as possible and dress according to the weather conditions. Try not to touch your face and nose again, and wash your hands with soap or use an antiseptic as often as possible, especially after visiting public places. And most importantly, if you get sick, stay at home and see your family doctor! After all, timely and correctly started treatment is the key to a quick recovery and avoiding serious complications.

By the way, the optimal time to administer the vaccine is September-October, but vaccination can be done throughout the entire episeason of influenza and SARS. Immunity after the introduction of the vaccine is formed after 14 days.

Influenza is a viral infection that is very easily transmitted from person to person by airborne droplets: when a sick person coughs, sneezes or simply talks. People within a radius of 2 meters around the patient are in the infection zone. A sick person, even with a mild form of the flu, can infect people around them during the entire period of illness – this is, on average, 7 days.
