A fragment of a rocket caused a heart attack: Lviv doctors fought for the life of a 12-year-old boy for three months

A fragment in the head provoked a brain infarction in a 12-year-old child. During the life of Mykhailo Bayev from Bakhmut, in whose yard a Russian rocket flew, the doctors of the National Rehabilitation Center NEZLAMNI fought for three months, and the boy was saved.

The family was consulting on the household when the shelling began. The rocket hit the yard. Its debris mortally wounded the father, and the boy was thrown into the house by the shock wave. The child in critical condition was urgently evacuated to Dnipro, where doctors managed to restore blood supply to the brain and stabilize the condition. Then the boy was taken by an evacuation train to Lviv to the NEZLAMNI First Medical Association center.

Due to damage to the carotid artery, the boy could not even swallow and speak. Computed tomography showed that two more fragments remained in the child’s brain – in the area behind the eyes and in the parietal area, which is close to the vital main vessels.

“The head of the department, neurosurgeon Mykhailo Lovga, understood that it is too dangerous to touch the debris. If the main vessel is damaged, there will be severe bleeding. The child may die. Therefore, Mykhailo begins to be treated medically. Specialists in rehabilitation – a physical therapist and a speech therapist – begin to work with the patient. In a few weeks of coordinated work, Mykhailo begins to speak, move his legs and even takes his first independent steps.

At the same time, there is another stage of treatment – the healing of shrapnel wounds and burns. Surgeons led by Oleksandr Kalinchuk and combustiologists Lesya Strelka and Halyna Sayan join in here. To close defects from wounds, they perform several operations together.

And now, after three months of treatment, Mykhailo with his grandmother and younger brother, who was also in the hospital with burns, are going to Dnipro – now they will live there. From the National Rehabilitation Center NEZLAMNI, the boy leaves on his own two feet. Thanks to the coordinated teamwork of our professionals, the child returns to a full life. And although two fragments will remain in his head forever, the doctors are certain: these fragments will not be able to harm the child,” the First Medical Association of Lviv reported.

By the way, during the full-scale invasion of Russia, doctors of the NEZLAMNI National Rehabilitation Center of the First Medical Association of Lviv provided assistance to 250 injured children.

We would like to remind you that in Lviv at the UNBROKEN National Rehabilitation Center, a multidisciplinary team works with every Ukrainian, providing surgical, physical, psychological and psychosocial professional assistance. Thanks to the support of donors, a prosthetic workshop has already been opened and bionic prostheses are being installed.
