Lviv’s Main Christmas Tree Transformed into Organic Fertilizer

Today, Lviv’s main Christmas tree, installed on December 5 in front of the Opera House, was dismantled and transported to the composting station at 13 Plastova Street. The tree will be turned into organic fertilizer for plants in city parks and squares. According to Roman Yatsykovych, project manager of LKP “Lvivspetskomuntrans,” this initiative demonstrates proper ecological waste management.

In the morning, workers from the Halytsky District removed the fencing around the tree, followed by LKP “Lvivsvitlo” staff dismantling decorations and lights. The tree was then sawed into parts by LKP “Zelenyi Lviv” and “Lvivspetskomuntrans.” The trunk will be used as firewood for greenhouses, while smaller branches were sent for shredding into compost.

At the composting station, the tree was first weighed, totaling 1,320 kg. The branches were shredded into wood chips, mixed with food waste and leaves, and composted over three months. After screening, the final product will be distributed for city use.

“Since this compost is highly concentrated, it must be mixed with soil in a ratio of 1:3 or 1:4,” explained Myroslava Bilokur, chief technologist at LKP “Green City.”

The tree was a gift to Lviv from the Pidvirny family in the village of Birky, Yavoriv District. The 18-meter-tall tree, which had grown in their yard for 20 years, was donated to bring joy to the city’s residents and visitors.

Additionally, Lviv continues collecting Christmas trees from residents. Designated collection points near waste container sites include:

  • 14a Volodymyra Velykoho St. (Nut Grove Park);
  • 117 Volodymyra Velykoho St.;
  • 7 Dovzhenka St.;
  • 86b Shyroka St.;
  • 54 Naukovaya St.;
  • 34 Patona St.;
  • 32 Muchna St.

Special vehicles will pick up trees from these locations on January 11–13 and 17–20. Trees can also be delivered directly to:

  • the composting station at 13 Plastova St.;
  • LKP “Zelenyi Lviv” at 167a Zamarshtynivska St.;
  • LKP “Lvivspetskomuntrans” at 18 Zhovkivska St.

Residents are urged to place trees beside waste bins rather than inside them. The Home for Rescued Animals (24 O. Dovbusha St.) also accepts trees.
