Stories from the front: a defender from Sambir region about his fight against the occupiers in Donetsk region

Already on February 25, Oleksandr went to the Military Commissariat, because he already had combat experience in the ATO/OS area.

At first, the man trained people who had no military training as an instructor, and later joined the ranks of the 24th OMBr named after King Danylo. Currently, together with his unit, he is restraining the enemy in Donetsk region.

“We are doing now what our ancestors did long ago, from the time of the Cossacks and the Ukrainian insurgent army. My village in the Sambir district, the village of Strelka, the birthplace of the founding of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen – Ususy,” says Strela proudly, which immediately explains the origin of his nickname.

Oleksandr explains his motivation to continue the fight against the Russian invaders:

“In 2011, the grand opening of the station, which was built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was held at my home. It was restored and where the railway track was cleared, that is, the rails were raised, the remains of people who were tied with barbed wire were found. In the well, from which I personally drank water as a child, when it was cleaned, they found the remains of two human bodies, which were also tied with barbed wire. Then, I remember, one grandfather told me that when he was a child, the NKVD hanged his mother and younger brother on the chestnut trees that still grow there, because they decided that she was a liaison officer of the UPA. So at the moment of February 24, 2022, I understood that if conscious people do not go here to defend the territory of the Ukrainian state, then the enemy will enter our native villages and cities and the same story will repeat itself again. Therefore, we have no choice. We must win,” said the soldier.
