The Rescue Story of a Newborn Boy in Lviv
🏥 The heart stopped twice! Our Center’s team successfully nursed a newborn boy in critical condition, whom his mother abandoned at birth. An incredible story of the triumph of a little boy.
Six hours after birth, a boy born in one of the maternity hospitals in the Lviv region was hospitalized in our hospital’s neonatal resuscitation department. After delivery, his mother refused him, and the child’s condition began to deteriorate rapidly in the maternity hospital. The baby developed respiratory disorders, prompting our specialized resuscitation team to be called.
During the stabilization of the condition in the maternity hospital, the child developed a pulmonary hemorrhage—a condition that is an absolute contraindication for transportation. Thanks to our team’s coordinated actions, doctors intubated the baby on-site and performed the necessary resuscitation measures. Only after stabilizing the condition and eliminating critical life threats was the child transported to our clinic.
Critical Condition and Intensive Therapy
Initial condition upon admission: critical respiratory failure, pulmonary hemorrhage, signs of early neonatal sepsis, septic shock, multiple organ failure, cardiovascular failure, hemorrhagic syndrome.
Immediately after hospitalization, the baby was placed on mechanical ventilation. However, due to progressive respiratory failure, congenital pneumonia, and severe lung tissue damage, no ventilation mode provided adequate gas exchange.
The severe lung damage required strict respiratory support parameters. The situation was critical and unpredictable, but after 4 hours of intensive therapy, adequate oxygenation and stabilization were achieved,
says Halyna Zaremba, head of the department.
In parallel, the child received comprehensive intensive therapy, which included: the use of several inotropic and vasopressor drugs for hemodynamic stabilization, antishock therapy, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, correction of electrolyte imbalances, and hemostatic dysfunction.
Due to two episodes of cardiac arrest and resuscitation measures, the child developed neurological complications—seizure syndrome, requiring additional correction with the involvement of neurologists and the administration of anticonvulsant therapy.
Recovery and New Family
Over time, the child’s condition stabilized: the septic process was eliminated, effective antibiotic therapy for pneumonia was conducted, and nutrition was gradually normalized.
❗️✨ Overall, the boy spent three months in our hospital. The little boy, whom our team named Bohdan, became special to the entire department. All doctors and medical staff cared for him, giving warmth, care, and love. They became like a family to him.
Once Bohdan fully recovered, social services found guardians for him.
This is our cherished child. We were all very anxious for him, fought together for his life, and now he has a family. We are sincerely happy for Bohdan. The moment the guardians first held him touched everyone. We cried from joy and sadness at the same time because we were saying goodbye to our little hero,
adds Halyna Zaremba.
✅🔎 The team of doctors who treated Bohdan: the doctors and medical staff of the neonatal resuscitation department led by Halyna Zaremba, including anesthesiologists Roman Sholomovych, Halyna Kishko, and Viktoria Kulych, who stabilized the baby in the local maternity hospital, and the doctors of the Clinic for Early Childhood Diseases and Rehabilitation with a center for post-intensive care and treatment of newborns, led by pediatrician-neonatologist Roksolyana Dub, including neonatologist, attending physician Myroslava Kushnir.
Bohdan experienced it all: resuscitation, intensive therapy, the fight for each breath. And he won. Three months in our hospital, the boy grew, gained strength, and became close to everyone in neonatal resuscitation. He was hugged, played with, loved—by the entire team. Bohdan went through a difficult path, and life gifted him with loving parents.
