The idea to equip cycling infrastructure in parallel with the repair of the M-09 highway of international importance was born in the cooperation of the leadership of the department of the urban agglomeration of the LMR with the leadership of the Kulykivska and Zhovkivska communities.
The latter even managed to officially vote for such an appeal at the city council session. Lviv and Kulikiv communities are next.
“This is what an agglomeration looks like in action, when neighboring communities have cooperated around the implementation of a joint project. If we succeed in this, everyone will benefit: first of all, residents of several communities, who will have a safe alternative route. And for Ukraine, this is another way to show that we choose European standards of development,” says Roman Kizyma, Deputy Director of the Urban Agglomeration Department.
The first step towards the implementation of the plan has been made. The three communities wrote an appeal to the EBRD, the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine and LOVA, which are responsible for the repair of the M-09 road of international importance in the Lviv-Rava-Ruska section. This repair involves the installation of bicycle paths, although only fragmentary ones.
“My colleagues from Zhovkivska and Kulikivska communities propose to build a continuous long cycle path from Lviv, some communities of Lviv MTG through Kulikiv and all the way to Zhovkva”, explains Roman Kizima.
There are many good reasons for this. There is already active bicycle traffic on this section of the road. Several tens of thousands of people go to Lviv every day by their own or public transport. Therefore, the arrangement of bicycle infrastructure will create an alternative safe way to get there and at the same time relieve the road. In addition, Zhovkva ranks second after Lviv in terms of the number of architectural and cultural monuments in the town. So the bike path will help attract more tourists to Zhovkva and significantly expand the tourism potential of the Lviv region.
The appeal also refers to the arrangement of high-quality pedestrian infrastructure within the boundaries of the road in the settlements through which they pass.
