Bank Card Fraud: How Not to Become a Victim

He pretended to be a bank employee – Lviv region police exposed the perpetrator. It has been established that the suspect is involved in at least 12 cases of misappropriating funds from bank cards throughout Ukraine, amounting to over 867,000 hryvnias.

How the Fraudsters Operated

The 33-year-old perpetrator posed as a bank employee, deceitfully obtained confidential information, and then withdrew funds from the victims’ accounts.

Police Recommendations

To avoid becoming a vishing victim, Lviv region police urge:

  • do not talk to unknown callers, especially if they ask you to provide or confirm confidential data;
  • do not disclose any financial information about yourself and your family members to outsiders;
  • do not share your card’s PIN code and one-time passwords with anyone;
  • conduct all card security operations directly at the bank branch or through the hotline or online banking app;
  • be cautious of numbers – fraudsters may call from spoofed contacts resembling bank numbers;
  • do not install suspicious programs – they might give fraudsters access to your finances;
  • do not panic! The goal of criminals is to make you make a quick decision.
