A simultaneous operation was performed at the Lviv Oncology Regional Treatment and Diagnostic Center: without taking the woman out of drug-induced sleep after the operation on the mammary gland, the doctors performed surgery on her colon.
The patient previously completed a course of preoperative chemotherapy for breast cancer. After the necessary examination and taking into account medical indications and risks, the center’s multidisciplinary team decided to remove both tumors from the woman’s body at the same time.
“The breast tumor was more than 2 centimeters, with damage to the axillary lymph node. Therefore, we performed a radical mastectomy. This operation lasted one hour.
Now the patient feels well. And our multidisciplinary team is waiting for the results of histology to decide on the optimal tactics of combined treatment,” said the head of the department of reconstructive surgery, surgeon-oncologist Ihor Protsko.
Oncologist-surgeon of the proctology department, Roman Shiyan, said that together with oncologist-surgeon Vasyl Pyzhevsky, they performed a laparoscopic high anterior resection of the rectum and removed the tumor in 3 hours. Immediately after this procedure, without taking the woman out of the drug-induced sleep, the doctors performed a second surgical intervention on her.
“A 62-year-old woman with stage III breast cancer was admitted to our cancer center. During computer tomography, the patient was also diagnosed with a tumor of the sigmoid colon, which turned out to be a clinical finding, since the patient did not have any complaints from the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, it can be considered a timely diagnosis,” said Roman Shiyan.
When examining patients, specialists focus not only on a specific oncopathology, but also on the general condition of the patient and the risks that may exist in one or another case. This helps to choose the most optimal treatment option.
Thanks to the coordinated work of the medical team, the operation was successful
