The danger of radiation lies in the fact that it, due to the emission of radionuclides into the air, pollutes the environment, as a result – food and drinking water.
If there is a sudden danger of hazardous substances being released into the atmosphere, the first priority is to stock up on food for the first 2-3 days after the emergency notification. This was discussed at the training “Radiation danger: rules that save lives” in Lviv OVA.
Until the authorities inform about the safety of tap water, you cannot use it until then, instead you should stock up on bottled water for 2-3 days. Boiling water from a well or tap will not rid it of radioactive substances. At the same time, it can be used for household chores (washing) and personal hygiene. Any radioactive material that enters surface or groundwater will be diluted with water to a very low level and will be safe to wash off skin, hair and clothing. It is important that the drinks in the refrigerator are safe for consumption.
Food products are safe if stored in airtight containers (cans, cans, bottles, boxes). Food from the refrigerator and freezer is also safe. In rural areas, it is better not to use vegetables.
Wipe food containers with a damp cloth before opening, and do the same with kitchen utensils before use. Place the used cloth in a plastic bag or airtight container and leave it in an inaccessible place, away from people and animals.
