Surgeons replaced the hand joint of a soldier in order to restore his ability to perform combat tasks.
This is the first such operation for endoprosthesis of hand joints in the National Rehabilitation Center NEZLAMNI of the First Medical Association of Lviv. The operation was successful, and the fighter has already returned to the front.
The defender is 45 years old, he is from Lviv. He went to the doctors because of constant and severe pain in his left hand. The little finger was swollen, the husband could no longer bend or unbend it. Everything is due to Dupuytren’s contracture, a pathology of the palmar connective tissue, which caused cicatricial changes in the joint. The condition was also worsened by a previously received injury to the finger. All together led to the deformation of the phalanx. As a result, the hand was excruciatingly painful even with the slightest movements of the fingers. The joint became immobile and began to collapse.
Only the replacement of the damaged joint could remove the pain and restore the movements of the finger. The operation took place in two stages. First, the man’s Dupuytren’s contracture was removed and the digital nerves were examined. During the next stage of interventions, the interphalangeal joint of the fifth finger was prosthetic.
Surgeon Roman Chepil, who performed the operation, notes that such prosthetics are most often needed by those who have had an injury or other diseases of the hands. And the main symptom that makes you go to the doctor is pain.
We will remind you that the National Rehabilitation Center NEZLAMNI is being created in the First Medical Association of Lviv. Thanks to this, doctors are already treating, prosthetics and rehabilitating Ukrainians in Ukraine. A multidisciplinary team works with each person at the center, providing surgical, physical, psychological and psychosocial professional care. Thanks to the support of donors, a prosthetics workshop has already been opened and the first bionic prostheses have been installed.
