In Lviv, doctors saved a father of ten children from a deadly disease

An ambulance took the 53-year-old patient to St. Panteleimon’s Hospital with sepsis and in serious condition.

Here the man underwent surgery. Despite minimal chances of recovery, he returned to normal life.

The patient is Serhiy Kryvko. He is originally from Dnipropetrovs’k. However, for the last 10 years he has been living in Dubliany with his family. He is a father of many children and a teacher in a family-type orphanage. He and his wife have always dreamed of a big family. But they were able to give life to only one son. In 2008, they took their first foster child under their care. And now they have 10 children.

The disease caught Serhiy by surprise. Seven months ago, he had a fever and a slight stomach ache. At the time, the man thought it was a cold, so he did not go to the doctor. But a month later, he was admitted to St. Panteleimon’s Hospital in serious condition. The man suffered from unbearable abdominal pain and was running a fever.

After the examination, doctors shocked the father of many children: his colon had ruptured. And in the abdominal cavity itself, an inflammatory tumor-like mass had formed. This formation damaged the colon, small intestine and bladder. Due to the prolonged inflammatory infection process, some of these organs died and a severe complication – sepsis – occurred.

In order to prevent the onset of septic shock, a critical condition in which the threat of death is extremely high, the surgeons decided to operate on the patient immediately.

“When they took me to the operating room, I was thinking only about my wife: what would happen if she was left alone,” Serhiy recalls now.

The doctors faced a difficult task.

“During the surgery, we had to remove a fragment of the colon, small intestine and a fragment of the bladder. Then we placed two stomas on the abdomen – artificial openings for the removal of intestinal contents,” says Hnat Herich, head of Department No. 1 of the Center for Surgery and Oncology.

After the surgery, the patient’s body continued to fight the infection. But to the surprise of the doctors themselves, in two days the patient’s condition stabilized and he was transferred from the intensive care unit to the surgical ward. And on the 14th day he was discharged home.

Six months have passed since the intervention. And now Sergiy has come to his rescuers to have the last planned intervention performed and the stomas removed to restore the functioning of the digestive tract.

Now the father of many children is facing a long rehabilitation at home. But he is ready for it. Most of all, the man wants to regain his strength to help his wife and continue to take care of all his ten children.
