A unique operation was performed in Lviv: a mother became a kidney donor for her 17-year-old son

Mom became a donor for her son and saved his life. Doctors successfully transplanted a kidney to a 17-year-old boy from Zhytomyr Region at the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital. He was sick from the age of 7.

The first manifestations of kidney disease were lethargy, rapid fatigue, and urination disorders. Back then, ten years ago, doctors diagnosed the boy with a congenital defect of the urinary system. At first, the disease could be treated with medication. But over time, the child’s condition began to deteriorate, and secondary chronic pyelonephritis – an infectious-inflammatory disease of the bacterial type – developed. Next – the destruction of the urinary tract, kidney failure and, ultimately, kidney failure.

Nazar was forced to live on dialysis for over a year and a half. This is a procedure for artificial blood purification and removal of excess fluid. And then the great war began. Nazar was evacuated to Israel. The family hoped that there the boy would receive a kidney transplant from a posthumous donor. However, the transplant did not work out in a foreign country. Tatiana’s mother took her son to Ukraine and firmly decided that she would not back down until she finally cured her child.

The woman turned to Lviv doctors and decided on a family transplant. At the St. Nicholas Hospital, the whole family underwent a compatibility test, and the mother’s kidney was a perfect match for Nazar. Tatyana was incredibly happy the moment she was informed about it. After all, an organ transplant from a family donor has a better chance of success.

The transplant went well. This was the third transplant of this organ from a family donor at the children’s hospital. Immediately after the transplant, the kidney started working just on the operating table. And within a week, mother and son returned home. Both are healthy. Now, Nazar, whose disease stole the last two years of his life, hopes to be able to catch up on his studies at school and enter university as soon as possible.
