In Lviv, the defender’s 5-year-old son was saved, whose kidney had atrophied, and a large bag with infected urine had formed instead. The life-threatening formation was successfully removed by the surgeons of the Saint Nicholas Children’s Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
The little patient’s name is Davydko Zilinka. He is from Ternopil. When the boy was three years old, his parents brought him for a routine ultrasound. During the examination, doctors did not find a healthy left kidney in the place where it should be. In order to find out what the problem was, the parents consulted various doctors and resorted to all possible diagnostic methods: from ultrasound and CT to x-rays with contrast.
During two months of continuous examinations, specialists established that Davydka’s left kidney is shriveled. That is, the child’s organ was atrophied, reduced in size and already began to lose the ability to produce urine and filter it. What’s more, they noticed how some formation began to form in the place of the shriveled kidney. However, they could not establish an exact diagnosis. Specialists decided to continue monitoring Davydka’s condition. Over time, the symptoms of the disease appeared: the boy had pains, and his general condition worsened.
“Recently, Davydka’s mother managed to get a consultation with the specialists of the Lviv Children’s Hospital of St. Nicholas, who came to Ternopil. Our specialists conducted the necessary additional examinations and established a diagnosis: terminal hydronephrosis on the left. Hydronephrosis is a pathological expansion and subsequent atrophy of kidney tissues that develops against the background of impaired urine outflow. It was hydronephrosis that led to the secondary shrinkage of the left kidney: it was deformed and reduced. At the same time, the kidney continued to secrete urine, which could no longer flow to the bladder. Fluid accumulated in the organ and distended it.
Over time, the kidney completely died, and a bag with infected urine formed in its place. Such a pathology is extremely life-threatening. It can cause hypertension and the development of various purulent processes in the child’s body. The last of the possible complications posed a direct threat to the child’s life, because the little patient could die from septic shock. Therefore, only an operation to remove the organ could save the 5-year-old child”, – said specialists of the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
Davydka’s father, who had just returned from the front, came to Lviv for the operation. So both mom and dad were by their son’s side at the critical moment. Lviv specialists decided to operate on the boy in the least traumatic way – with the help of the Da Vinci robotic surgeon. During the intervention, surgeons made three small holes of 8 mm and quickly and successfully removed the affected kidney.
Now Davydka is no longer in danger. The boy is recovering quickly after the operation. And in the future, he dreams, like his father, to become a soldier and defend Ukraine.
