A unique event occurred in the history of medicine in Lviv, when local specialists managed to transplant a liver to a patient twice. 32-year-old Ostap Tolkach, suffering from cirrhosis, was able to receive life-saving chances from two different donors with a rare blood type in just one month.
His condition worsened last year, prompting him to seek transplantation from Lviv doctors. The first operation took place on August 13, but complications arose. Despite the difficulties, a month later a new donor was found, and on September 13, the patient successfully received a second liver transplant.
This case became the first successful retransplantation at the Transplantation Center of the First Medical Association of Lviv, which holds leading positions in Ukraine for performing transplants.
Ostap Tolkach, who is already planning his future and dreams of returning to his profession as a pastry chef, expressed gratitude to the medical team and the families of the donors who made his rescue possible.
