In Lviv Oblast, about 8,500 adults suffer from various types of pneumonia every year

Pneumonia is an acute inflammation of the lungs, often caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. The most common causative agent is the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, but other organisms, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can also cause the infection.

The main symptoms of pneumonia are

  • high temperature, chills and fever;
  • severe cough (often with sputum);
  • chest pain, especially when breathing or coughing;
  • shortness of breath and feeling of lack of air;
  • general weakness, fatigue.

Risk factors:

  • Weakened immune system (especially in children, the elderly and patients with chronic diseases);
  • chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, COPD);
  • previous respiratory infections such as influenza;
  • smoking and alcohol consumption
  • staying in places with an increased risk of infection (hospitals, crowded places).

Prevention includes regular handwashing, vaccinations, a healthy lifestyle, and timely medical attention when symptoms appear. For people at risk, it is especially important not to ignore preventive measures.

“In the Lviv region, about 8,500 adults suffer from pneumonia of various types (viral, bacterial, atypical) every year, which indicates the need for increased attention to the prevention and early detection of this disease.

Each type of pneumonia requires a specific approach to treatment, so it is important to conduct an accurate diagnosis to determine the nature of the infection and choose the best therapy.

The Centre for Pulmonary Health employs experienced pulmonologists who provide professional assistance in the diagnosis and treatment of pneumonia. We provide a modern approach and effective treatment methods to help each patient,” said Nadiia Rudnytska, head of the pulmonology department at the Lung Health Centre and an expert at the Health Department of the Regional State Administration.

“It is extremely dangerous to treat pneumonia on your own. If you have symptoms, consult a doctor. Only a specialist can confirm or deny your fears, make a diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Prevention of pneumonia in children is one of the main elements of the strategy to reduce child mortality in the world, as emphasised by the WHO. Routine vaccination is recognised as the most effective method of preventing pneumonia.

Preventing pneumonia in children and adults also involves strengthening the immune system. First of all, make sure that your diet is balanced and healthy, and for newborns, breastfeeding will strengthen the immune system.
