The first angiographer at the children’s hospital already helped save the baby’s life. The latest X-ray system makes it possible to detect diseases with high accuracy and minimal trauma and to operate even on newborn children with diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Lviv Saint Nicholas Hospital became the only multidisciplinary children’s hospital in Ukraine with its own angiography. This was reported in the First Medical Association of Lviv.
The patient is little Eva from the Volyn region. She is 8 months old. Immediately after birth, doctors discovered critical stenosis of the pulmonary artery in her. This is a congenital defect in which the flow of blood from the heart to the lungs of the child is disturbed. It was necessary to operate in the first days of life, otherwise the child would not have survived.
“The parents turned to the specialists of the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital for help. Here, cardiac surgeons operated on the baby for the first time on the 11th day after birth. But now, when Eva has already gained weight and grown up, the pulmonary valve has narrowed. And the blood flow to the pulmonary artery has worsened. Doctors decide: it is time for a planned correction of a heart defect.
During the operation, our interventional radiologists together with cardiac surgeons made a single small puncture in the femoral vein. Through her, specialists got to the heart. Then the valve was inflated with a special balloon, restoring blood flow through the pulmonary artery.
The operation lasted only 30 minutes. Doctors are satisfied with her results: during the intervention, the pressure difference between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery normalized. Therefore, just a few hours after the intervention, Eva became more active and went home with her parents the next day. Everything is fine with the girl,” said the First Medical Association of Lviv.
Thanks to benefactors, the specialists of St. Nicholas Hospital can save even more children with narrowing or blockage of blood vessels, impaired cerebral blood circulation and aneurysms, bleeding and tumor processes. They purchased this state-of-the-art Japanese SHIMADZU angiography system for the children’s hospital. This is equipment from one of the world’s leading manufacturers of x-ray equipment.
“We are very grateful to Oksana Dmitrieva, who helped to organize and receive an angiographic system, invaluable for us, from our friends from overseas – the people of Taiwan.
Boundless gratitude to the people of Taiwan, which supports Ukraine and Ukrainian children in a difficult time for our country,” added the First Medical Association of Lviv.liuku
