Vasyl Markevych, a resident of the Drohobych community who repeatedly stood up for Ukraine, gave his life while defending the country from the aggressor. He was born on February 9, 1977, in the village of Ranevychi and had been an active participant in the ATO since 2014. With the onset of the full-scale invasion, Vasyl immediately joined the ranks of defenders.
After training at the Drohobych Mechanotechnological Vocational College, Vasyl worked at a drilling plant, later at the company “Discovery – Drilling Equipment” in Stryi. He served in the 24th Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo, fighting on the eastern fronts of Ukraine.
Vasyl was seriously injured in July 2024, but after recovering, he returned to his comrades at the front. He died on January 27, 2025, during defensive actions in the city of Chasiv Yar, serving as a grenadier.
The Drohobych City Council members and Mayor Taras Kuchma expressed their condolences and support to Vasyl’s family. The mourning procession on January 31 will proceed to the hero’s native home, where a wake will be held in the evening. The funeral rites are scheduled for February 1 in the village of Ranevychi.
Ukraine will remember its fighter for freedom and independence, and his name will live on in the memory of future generations.
