All residents and guests of the city who are suspected or have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchial asthma and complications after Covid-19 can undergo spirography free of charge. The action of the health care department of the Lviv City Council and the Second Medical Association of Lviv “Breathe to your full chest” lasts from March 13 to 31.
Such an examination is carried out in the Pulmis Municipal Medical and Diagnostic Clinic, the Municipal Allergological Clinic and the Therapy Center of the Second Medical Association of Lviv.
Spirography is a method of studying the function of the lungs by graphically recording their volume during breathing. With the help of this, you can determine not only obstruction, but also restriction, blockage, even cancer, when the patient does not exhale properly.
Outpatients are consulted by a pulmonologist or an allergist. Then the doctor decides whether to continue treatment at home or whether the patient needs to be hospitalized.
“It is very important to detect the disease in the early stages. When the patient has already turned to us, it is mostly stage III-IV. Smokers think that the cough is from smoking, and that’s why they don’t come to the doctors. We have a practice of signing up for spirometry of all patients who come to the polyclinic. Thus, in a year in Lviv, we identify about 500 patients with early stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” explains Olena Kulitka, a pulmonologist at the Pulmis City Medical and Diagnostic Clinic.
It is recommended to undergo an examination for people who have the following symptoms: inability to breathe fully, shortness of breath, lack of air, constant cough, wheezing while breathing, elevated body temperature. Special preparation for spirography is not required.
