Successful Surgery for a Newborn with Esophageal Atresia in Lviv

A team of doctors at our Center successfully operated on a newborn baby with esophageal atresia.

❗️Esophageal atresia is a complex congenital condition in which the parts of the esophagus are not connected. This results in food being unable to pass from the mouth to the stomach, leading to the development of aspiration pneumonia, respiratory and cardiovascular failure, and if untreated, a threat to life!

The newborn boy, Pavlyk, was transferred to our hospital from a maternity ward in the Lviv region.

“This is one of the most complex defects in newborns. Without urgent surgical intervention, a child simply cannot survive. Such interventions need to be done in the first days after birth because babies with this condition cannot eat. We have been performing such operations for a long time and have great experience,” said surgeon Oleg Lenin.

In Pavlyk’s case, the lower segment of the esophagus flowed into the trachea, causing gastric contents to enter the lungs, leading to severe pneumonia with the risk of fatal outcome.

✅ Our doctors conducted a comprehensive examination to exclude other defects. On the second day of his life, a complex reconstructive surgery was performed: the pathological connection between the esophagus and the airways was severed. The upper and lower segments of the esophagus were connected by a direct anastomosis.

“This is a technically complex operation. The complication is that the age of such children at the time of intervention is very young. However, waiting is not an option,” added Oleg Lenin.

The first four days after the surgery, Pavlyk was on artificial lung ventilation (ALV) under constant supervision by doctors from the neonatal intensive care unit. He received antibiotic therapy, respiratory support, and parenteral nutrition.

“The child was anesthetized, relaxed. He could not move actively for the first days. This was necessary to allow the anastomosis created during the surgery to heal correctly. The baby was on ALV for 4 days,” explained the head of the neonatal intensive care unit, anesthesiologist Halyna Zaremba.

His condition was stabilized, after which he was transferred to the post-intensive care unit, where he was under his mother’s care. Thanks to the professionalism of our doctors, the boy has a chance at a healthy life!
